I’ve had this strapless blue lace dress in my closet since February when I bought it on super sale from Forever 21. It’s one of those rare Forever 21 finds: high quality (lined, even!) and decidedly longer than shirt-length (unlike the majority of their “dresses”). I wore it a few weeks ago for a friend’s wedding in Michigan. I had the whole outfit picked out well in advance, including the makeup and hairstyle. Unfortunately, things did not go exactly as I had planned…

The wedding we attended was in Port Huron, Michigan, which isn’t too far from my husband Curtis’ home town of Ann Arbor. His family still lives in and around Ann Arbor, so we drove to Michigan a few days early to spend some time with them. The morning of the wedding, after an evening of too many beers and too much late night diner food in downtown Ann Arbor, we groggily packed up and began our drive to Port Huron.

Thirty minutes outside Ann Arbor I suddenly realized that while I had dutifully packed up my suitcase, I had entirely forgotten to actually load it into the car. It was sitting in Curtis’ parents guest bedroom, zipped and ready to go. I decidedly lost my cool. I did have this blue dress in the car–I’d already ironed it and hung it in the back with Curtis’ suit–but I had nothing else. The shoes, the makeup, the clutch, the curling wand, the jewelry, even my strapless bra were all back in Ann Arbor.

I pressed Curtis to turn around, but when we looked across at the highway leading back to Ann Arbor we saw an enormous traffic jam. There was no way we’d have enough time to go back and get to the wedding on time. I was totally screwed.

Being the problem solver he is, Curtis asked me if we could get what I needed in Port Huron. It was his idea to find a mall/salon/Target to find replacements for what I had left behind. After some quick searching around on Google, I found a Target in Port Huron that was actually attached to a mall and quickly calculated that I could get the bare minimum of what I needed there before the wedding.

What you see in this post is the outfit and styling I had originally planned for the wedding. The outfit I ended up with was pretty darn similar. I found these shoes in white at Target which were definitely close enough. I purchased new mascara, an eyebrow brush (which was awful), and new eyeliner (which I loved). Luckily I had my Burt’s Bees lip crayon on me already. I also quickly grabbed Target’s nicest curling wand and a cheap strapless bra to get me through the occasion. Target’s pearl jewelry was awful, but luckily, there was a Macy’s right next to the Target, so I grabbed a set of Anne Klein pearls there. I already owned the necklace and pearl studs that I purchased, but I managed to find the matching bracelet that I didn’t already own. Instead of this pearl clutch, I used my trusty Kate Spade gold wristlet that I always have on me because I use it as a wallet. All in all, the outfit came together surprisingly well.

One note on the curling wand. Its conical shape made it almost impossible to use. As soon as I began wrapping my hair around the base it would begin to slide down toward the tip, so I could hardly get all of my hair wrapped around it. It was a long and aggravating process to curl my hair with it, so I wasn’t sorry to return it after a single use. I also returned the necklace and studs. They were as good as new after one use.

On a happier note, the wedding was beautiful and a ton of fun. I always like weddings–they’re a fun excuse to get dressed up, spend time with family and friends, and party the night away. This wedding was no exception–we danced, drank, smoked cigars, and even hit the after-party nearby. I can’t wait for the next wedding we’ll get to attend, though I’ll definitely plan on being better prepared than I was for this one!
