During my college years in Ann Arbor, I was quite the hippie, as any of my college friends will tell you. I had long hippie curls, I shopped exclusively at Ann Arbor’s food co-op, I was obsessed with recycling, and I bought a lot of my clothes at Orchid Lane. I fell in love with this boutique the moment I first walked through the door many years ago. They specialize in fair-trade and eco-friendly fashion, with most of what they sell coming from cooperatives around the world. Even though I’ve left my hippie past behind, I still love buying clothing that’s been produced fairly and using my dollar to make a positive impact on the world.
Kaftan dresses are great for summer, especially during late July and August when the temperatures and humidity are both too high to wear anything too tight or too warm. Plus, kaftans instantly provide an amazing boho-chic vibe. I like that this one is short, which makes it less of a beach dress and more of a cocktail dress. This dress is also 100% silk, and only $15! I’m seriously considering getting it a few more colors.
I’ve been featuring a lot of summer sale purchases lately, and these heels are no exception. I got them for $20 at Zara’s summer sale. Zara makes the best shoes for big feet. In general, I find that my size 9.5 feet ache in most heels, which I attribute largely to the fact that most heels just don’t have a toe box/area big enough to accommodate the front of my foot. This is not the case at Zara. I can already tell that these sandals are going to be some of the most comfortable heels in my closet.
I have to make a shout out to my good friend Vanessa for accompanying me to Orchid Lane after brunch and a few too many mimosas. She gave me quality advice on what to buy and what not to consider–something that’s important when looking at clothing items that might be a bit more “out there.” You always want a trusted friend nearby when making fashion choices that might be a bit risky. I’m happy to say that I walked away with quite a few purchases that I can’t wait to share on the blog in the coming weeks.
If you’re looking for a Kaftan Dress my first recommendation would be Orchide Lane–they even have an online shop now. For a few other options, I like this dark print kaftan, this long pink kaftan maxi, and this embroidered kaftan.
