Maxi dresses: beautiful, classy, possessed of old-world charm. A well-chosen maxi is the single best garment to class up an other wise boring and overly casual summer wardrobe. It’s in the end of August, so maxi dress prices are dropping faster than the thermometer. If you’re a frugal shopper like me, it’s time to stock up for next summer.
I think the thing to be most concious of when maxi shopping is the fabric. Jersey maxis can be tricky–they can often seem really cheap and unflattering–like you’re wearing a long flowey bed sheet or set of frumpy pajamas around all day. The safe bet is to opt for another fabric, like this one, which is a polyster blend that feels amost chiffon-esque. Here are some other great non-jersey maxi options (all of them on sale): navy lace, pale blue lace, tiered coral, and vertical gradients.
I like to wear chunkier jewelry with dresses like this. Sometimes plainer jewelry can make the whole outfit fall a bit flat. Pairing pearls and florals isn’t rocket science, so to escape looking generic, chunkier jewelry like this crystal pendant necklace, this mother of pearl ring, or this resin bangle would pair well with almost any look.
