When I built my capsule wardrobe I knew that fit-and-flare dresses would be a foundational garment. They are, hands down, my favorite type of clothing. A good fit-and-flare, or A-line dress is comfortable, flattering, and timelessly classic.
I particularly like that dresses in this shape work with my body. Rather than trying to compress my body into an odd tube shape the way sheath dresses or tight slacks do, or conceal my body in a loose bag the way trapeze or swing dresses do, an A-line dress works perfectly for my pear-shape. It’s tight at my waist–a feature I like to highlight–and loose around my hips. I actually recently noticed a few men or Reddit complaining that they had to wear pants and button downs to work while their female coworkers lounged in comfortable sundresses. How the tables have turned.
When I went in search for a few A-line dresses to put in the capsule I had a few things in mind. I wanted them to be high quality (but machine washable) and I wanted them to be in the color palette I’d selected for my capsule wardrobe. A quick scour of the internet yielded Eliza J, purveyor of gorgeous A-line (and sheath) dresses in bright, solid colors. Her dresses aren’t cheap, but they feel delightfully substantial. The material is thick, the dresses are lined, and they even come with pockets! I purchased two, and so far I feel quite happy with them.
