My 9 Favorite (Super Easy) Ways to Tie a Scarf

Season: Fall & Winter

Chances are that you’ve seen a tutorial on how to tie a scarf already, but remember that like anything in fashion, trends go as fast as they come, and scarves and methods of tying them aren’t an exception. Until recently I thought I had my scarf game on lockdown, and then I looked around and realized that EVERYONE is wearing blanket scarves and I didn’t own a single one, and when I bought one, I realized I was utterly clueless as to how to wear one. So this series of nine tutorials focuses on the prevailing blanket scarf and just how to wear it.

Before we get into the tutorials, I’d like to make just one quick note about making a blanket scarf purchase. Let me be blunt: do not get ripped off. You should never spend more than $15 on a scarf, unless it’s hand-crafted out of the finest organic wool from a sheep that gets more massages than you do. I’ve been appauled at the prices of scarves, of late. Sole Society is particularly guilty. They brag when their scarves are on sale for $30 (at 50% off). This is not a deal, my friends.

In the last few years I’ve become aquainted with several budget online retailers, and scarves are exactly the kind of thing you should purchase from them. Trust me, they’re the same quality as what you’ll find at most generic retailers but at fraction of the price. All the scarves you see in this post were less than $15. They’re all good quality–they stand up to washing and they feel soft yet substantial. See below for the product information:

blue plaid scarf Zaful ($11)
brown plaid scarf Zaful($9)
brown houndstooth scarf Zaful ($14.50)
pink plaid scarf Zaful ($10.50)

  1. These are all really nice, but I want to see how one is supposed to wear a blanket scarf in winter in Chicago with their heavy sweater and their puffer coat. Show me a style for that. Show me how to wear it to keep warm in REAL winter weather and still be able to move through the streets of Chicago, not just meet friends for brunch. I have not been able to find any posts on that. Thanks!
