Tara Lipinski was a name I was intimately familiar with during the Nagano winter Olympic games in 1998, back when I was in 7th grade. She won gold that year in a closely contested match with Michelle Kwan, who went into the games favorited to win. After the games, I, like most casual observers, went on with my life. Tara fell completely off my radar.
But then, several years ago, I found out that she had teamed up with fellow Olympic figure skater Johnny Weir as a broadcaster for NBC. They provide cultural and fashion commentary on various sporting events, and they are fabulous. Like Regina George, they always look fierce. The two have a playful buoyancy on screen together–the fact that they’re real-life best friends helps. Since then, I’ve followed their commentary and loved every second of it.
The two are currently in Rio commentating on the Olympics, hosting a podcast, and producing amazing Instagram videos in their adjoining hotel rooms. On a slow afternoon, I ended up going through almost all of Tara’s personal Instagram feed, becoming more and more infatuated with her incredible style. I was so inspired, I decided to put together this post to feature my favorite looks of hers.
This is a photo-heavy post, so be prepared. If you want even more of Tara’s style, check out the Pinterest board I put together. Enjoy!
If there’s one thing Tara seems to love, it’s a bright sundress. She and I have that in common. I love that she goes for feminine silhouettes, florals, and bold colors. I pretty much want to steal her entire sundress collection–it’s so fabulous. Here are some of my favorites.
As a figure-skater-turned broadcaster, Tara knows how to get dressed up. She trades her flip flops for sky-high heels and sundresses for cocktail dresses and gowns. Tara definitely goes for a bit of sex appeal with her dress choices, but doesn’t go over the top, which I love. You’ll often see her in sheath or fit-and-flare dresses that have bold details like sequins, ruffles, or tulle.
Tara’s casual style has definitely inspired me to work on my own “off-duty” looks. She knows to how to achieve that perfect “I just woke up like this” look. She often pairs flip flops and leggings with the cutest tops or details to keep things chic while being ultra comfortable. I love her chunky knits and cute accessories.
As a figure skating olympic gold medalist, Tara obviously knows how to dress for the cold. Her winter style is centered around chunky knitwear, gorgeous boots, and fabulous hats. She’s definitely inspired me to up my winter hat game.
Longtime readers will know that I’ve very slowly been getting more and more into beauty. I used to think makeup always felt like “too much,” and I bought into the current paradigm that only the insecure would need to paint their faces and cover up their features. I’ve since learned better. Great makeup is a wonderful way to pull a look together, and like a good heel or the perfect dress it’s simply a fashion statement, not a statment on how a person feels about themselves.
Tara likes to wear bold makeup, and I’m a fan. I particularly like the bright lip color and thick eyeliner she wears–it really enhances her features and brings a bright pop of color into every look. I also love her hair. Tara likes to rock big curls with a beachy, bohemian flair. Her hair is basically my ideal hairstyle, and I’ve got plans to try to emulate it even more than I already do.
Tara loves a good heel, which she frequently mentions in her podcast with Johnny Weir. She and I share an affinity for bold, statement heels. But she and I also share a lifestyle that regularly requires lots of walking, so her collection also includes adorable flats. I really love how she often just wears flip flops that match her outfits. It gives off the vibe that she just switched out of her heels into the flip flops. Here are a few of my favorites from her collection of footwear.
Tara & Johnny
I’m totally obsessed with Tara & Johnny. I love their style. I love their commentary. I love that they’re best friends. Their coverage at the Rio Olympics has been so fun to watch–I wish there was more of it. Their new podcast is decidedly my favorite podcast of all time–they’re just incredibly funny and genuine. It’s so great to see two former Olympians come together the way they have.
In terms of stye, Tara and Johnny often try to match their outfits or play their looks off one another. They always look fabulous together. Here are a few of my favorite looks of theirs:
