Travel Diary: Traverse City, Michigan – Part 1

At long last, I'm so excited to share with you part one of the travel diary of my recent trip up to Traverse City. As a native Michigander, I'm particularly excited about this post--I'm always looking for opportunities to expound on the merits of travelling to my home state. After all, as my father-in-law says, four out of five Great Lakes prefer Michigan.

Traverse City reached out to me this summer to see if I'd be interested in taking a trip up north this fall to visit their many breweries, restaurants, boutiques, and wineries. They had me at brewery.

We have A LOT of trips coming up. All of them are in 2017, so earlier this summer, between booking flights for Hawaii in January and planning our itinerary through Germany next May I had a peek at the prices for flights out to Colorado over Labor Day. As regular 9-5ers, my husband Curtis and I find that days off more than cost are the limiting factor on our travel experiences, so I always try to make use of long weekends as a way to garner more vacation days. Labor Day has always been a travel day for us--in the past that has included Washington and Oregon, Italy, and Germany.

Why Colorado, you ask? My mom recently moved to Longmont, and I was anxious to visit her. I figured there would be lots of things for us to see and do, including visiting one of our good friends who lives in Boulder. Looking back on our trip, Colorado ranks high on the list of my favorite places we've visited. I think the biggest reason for this is that something in me just loves mountains--the same way something there is that doesn't love a wall. It's innate.

Last spring my husband and I got married in St. Thomas with a small group of family and friends. Since that time, several of those friends, along with my husband’s parents, have been saying “we have to go back” (an inside joke from Lost) because vacationing together in the Caribbean was such a great time. Last spring my husband and I got married in St. Thomas with a small group of family and friends. Since that time, several of those friends, along with my husband's parents, have been saying "we have to go back" (an inside joke from Lost) because vacationing together in the Caribbean was such a great time. As the weather descended into typically dismal temperatures in December, I made the decision to plan a trip with those friends and Curtis' parents to the Caribbean this winter.

Longstanding tradition dictates that every fall, in the middle of November, we go to hunting camp. I'm a rural Midwestern girl at heart, so this doesn't seem strange to me, but I do understand that it might seem strange to many of you out there. When I described going to hunting camp to several of my coworkers they all seemed surprised that hunting whitetail deer is even a thing people do, and they were doubly shocked to find out that it's something I'm interested in. For this, I have to credit my father, who has been an outdoorsman his whole life and introduced it to me at an early age.

This post will both detail our adventures on this trip and explain a bit more about what hunting camp is and isn't for the uninitiated.

This Labor Day we decided to visit family out on the west coast. We spent the first half of our trip visiting my husband’s aunt and uncle at their beautiful home on San Juan island, a small island off the coast of Seattle in the Puget Sound. The second half of the trip we spent with my brother George and his wife Aimee. They were unfortunately (but understandably) unable to make it out to our wedding the Caribbean last spring, so part of the impetus for this trip was to spend some time with them to celebrate our marriage, but also to celebrate theirs. They moved out to Oregon from Michigan after they were married two years ago and I hadn’t yet been out for a visit. We decided to rent a cabin together near Mount Hood so we could spend our days hiking and being active and our nights making dinner together and relaxing. We had a fabulous time.

Usually we spend the 4th of July in Chicago on our roof deck watching a near 360-degree firework show. This year was a bit different. We were invited to a family reunion (on my husband’s side) in Attica, Indiana. Being in Attica felt like taking a trip back in time. I spent an afternoon reading… View Article
