One of my favorite dishes that I discovered in Japan when we travelled there several years ago was cold soba. I had never experienced this dish before, and I loved the hearty flavor of the soba--they're made using buckwheat flour--and the salty sweet dipping sauce that came with it.

It’s so humid in Chicago right now that walking to work feels like walking through a swimming pool. It's so humid in Chicago right now that walking to work feels like walking through a swimming pool. With this level of humidity, the heat feels excruciating and the thought of drinking hot coffee (outside my arctic air-conditioned office, that is) is almost unbearable. Our brick and timber loft soaks in heat in the summer, so on weekend mornings I've been craving iced coffee. I never used to drink iced coffee, but this summer I decided to give iced lattes a try and I immediately fell in love with them. That said, getting a daily beverage from Starbucks is way too expensive for me, so I decided to make my own.

In the last few weeks, I’ve been to Cruz Blanca an inordinately large number of times. When we first heard that Rick Bayless (a well-known Chicago chef and restauranteur specializing in Mexican food) was opening a restaurant in the West Loop I was ecstatic. I've been to almost every other restaurant of his and loved all of them, including the ones at the airport with the excellent margaritas (a pre-flight staple).

I usually like to have something a bit sweet with almost every meal, even if it's something small. Recently, when I was on the hunt for something healthy and sweet at my work's cafeteria at lunch I spied a blueberry quinoa bar that was remarkably low in calories. I gave it a try, and found that it was either entirely sugar free or so close to being sugar free that I couldn't detect any sweetness other than the blueberries. Surprisingly, this was totally enough. The sweetness of the blueberries went with the nuttiness of the quinoa in a very satisfying way. I resolved to craft my own at home.

I’ve always been a big fan of caprese salad. Whats not to like? It has basil, tons of mozzarella cheese, and lots of savory olive oil. My only issue with it is that, generally, it’s pretty caloric. All that cheese and olive oil really adds up. I was recently craving caprese salad and decided that… View Article

All that cheese and olive oil really adds up. I was recently craving caprese salad and decided that spiraling everything in it could make a smaller serving of it seem larger.

Asian noodle dishes are some of my favorites to make at home because it's just so challenging to figure out the nutritional and caloric content when you're getting it from a restaurant. Typically, noodle dishes like these are made with lots of oil, but because oil is so caloric and fatty a small difference in oil content can add up to a big difference in calories and the overall healthiness of the dish. Rather than wondering, I'd rather just make it at home and know I'm eating something that tastes good and is good for me too.

Since I made kale and cauliflower colcannon for Saint Patrick’s Day this year I’ve been incorporating more and more kale into my diet. It really is the steak of greens: hearty and satisfying. Most of my early kale dishes involved cooked kale. I wanted to branch out and try raw kale, so I gave this… View Article
